There's a reason scenic Central Oregon is one of the fastest-growing communities in the country: More and more people have discovered its extraordinary charms and decided to make what was perhaps intended as a visit into something permanent. It's easy to understand why. With 300 days of sunshine, a temperate climate and some of the most spectacular scenery in the country, Central Oregon provides exactly the sort of environment the rest of the country can only envy. The first thing to know about Central Oregon (other than that it's an incredible place to live) is that it's anchored by three main cities: the golden triangle of Bend, Redmond and Sisters. Sisters, located at the foot of the Cascade Mountains, secures the northern tip of the triangle, with Redmond to the east and Bend to the south. Keep heading east of Redmond and you´ll find the towns of Powell Butte and Prineville; journey south of Bend, and you'll find first the popular destination resort Sunriver (along with its new cousin, Caldera Springs), then the recently incorporated city of La Pine. Last but definitely not least, there's Tumalo, the tiny little hamlet where I hang my hat. It's a truly unique community of mostly rural ranch properties located between Sisters and Bend (I like to describe it as not a location but a state of mind).
If you're new to Central Oregon, you may not know that each location has a very distinct personality, topography and climate, and most vary markedly. For example, there's sophisticated, culture-rich Bend; the close-knit Frontier-influenced Sisters; and rugged Redmond. When it comes to geography, you´ll find everything from snow-capped vistas to desert landscapes. October 2008 Real Estate Market Snapshot for Sisters, Oregon
As summer transitions into fall, the Sisters real estate market continues to experience only minor changes. We did see another slight dip in the number of listings (down from a summer high of 243 in July to 192 in October), but there was also a slight decrease in the number of sales (from a high of 11 in June and July to eight in October). The high volume of inventory -- an 18-month supply of Single Family Residences and a 36-month supply of homes on one acre or more ?- continues to be a concern for sellers here, while the many options in a broad range of price points should appeal to potential buyers.
